Building Community at Mosaics Resource Center: Turning Pain into Power

Uplift The People
I am a previous employee and current intern of Mosaics Resource Center/United Drag Alliance. Mosaics Resource Center, a program created by 501(c)3 United Drag Alliance, (per the UDA website) aims to “provide education, health, and housing resources to those most in need inside rural queer communities in the intermountain west.” During my time there, Mosaics experienced two bomb threats, and the founders faced a SWATTING attempt. Created by Utah drag queen Tara Lipsyncki and their partner, Mosaics previously had a physical space which sold books and offered free gender-affirming clothing, but has moved entirely remote due to the difficulty finding funding in such an anti-DEI climate. Do not lose hope, though. Mosaics is still hosting community building events through the help of other organizations in the area letting Mosaics borrow their space. Additionally, Mosaics offers livestreamed events, such as drag story hour. UDA offers grants to individuals facing housing insecurity, food insecurity, medical bills, and more.

The treatment for PTSD is community. Building community is suicide prevention. Mosaics was open on Christmas and Christmas Eve, welcoming anyone with nowhere else to go. Mosaics has probably saved my life by giving me a place to go for holidays and by hosting community building events.

Disenfranchised groups should not be forced to move to big cities to find community, so Mosaics brough community to Utah County. I am proud to help contribute to their mission.
