The Importance of Language and Connection

Teach The People
My name is Mara Colter. I am a mother. I am an educator. I am a member of my community. I work as a “Newcomer Specialist” at two schools. My title used to be an English Learner (EL) teacher. Now, I also work with other teachers by giving them resources and guidance to better help their students that don’t speak English yet. I hope to inspire my students in the same way they inspire me. Everyday, they come to school eager to learn another language. I am honored to be a part of their journey towards English fluency. I am also honored to support them and their endeavors. I enjoy following their academic journeys and celebrating them at their high school graduations and beyond.
Some students don’t have the support they need; I hope to be that support system to the best of my ability. I work to build connections with trust and respect with each of my students. Trust and respect are essential in order for them to have a willingness to learn. English is a tool that is important for building relationships, learning, and working. I hope that through the connections I build, I can show them both the importance of English and community.
