Building community and belonging for students of color in STEM at Wheaton College

Advocate For The People
My name is Ashley Barreto and I am the President of the Ohm Initiative at Wheaton College. The Ohm Initiative is a student run, student organized, and student initiated space designed to support students of color, especially those from urban backgrounds and those involved in STEM fields. We are a theme house and a community that blends academic support with cultural affirmation and shared lived experience. I contribute by helping organize workshops, community gatherings, and mentoring spaces that promote STEM engagement and financial literacy through hands-on learning and collaborative projects. What inspires me is seeing students feel seen, welcomed, and encouraged when they walk into our space. Many of us come from environments where we have had to work twice as hard to be understood and valued. The Ohm Initiative helps counter isolation by creating a place where our voices and ideas are respected.
