Apples for all

Feed The People
I’m Hallie Kennedy and I find apples that fall off trees and that aren't being used and get permission from the property owners to take them to make food for myself and for my community.
Once the apples are picked I sort them, and then use them in food. Sometimes I use apples to make into pie or crisp filling, while the rest are steamed for juice, and then turned into sauce or butter which can be used in any number of recipes. Sometimes I put the final product in small cans and give them away to people, but other times I’ll just give away whole dishes or treats made out of apples.

Much of the apple products are given to elderly people who can’t make things like this anymore. Other dishes and products I give out to young families who want good food for their kids but are short on time. I’ll also give things to single individuals who either don’t know how to make it themselves, or are too busy with school or work. And of course, my own family uses a fair amount.

The reason I do this is because I grew up with friends who were very hospitable, and they always had homemade food for whoever was over. My Mom did a bit of canning and “gleaning” as we called it, when I was a kid, so I grew up doing it, and have always enjoyed it.

Another reason is because I don’t like seeing people stressing over grocery prices when there’s an abundance of free food available.
Many people aren’t aware of how to use what they have, or aren’t aware that there is free food available; I am hoping to help reduce food waste - even if only in small ways - and help others learn cheaper, more sustainable ways to feed their families.

One of the reasons I do this is because I find a lot of joy in making delicious treats for people to enjoy. Even better than that is the knowledge that a few people can breathe easier since there’s one less thing they need to buy.
