My name is Judy Fairchild, and I am a SC Master Naturalist and educator here in Charleston. I run a blog and channel called Nature Walks With Judy, where I share my discoveries and explorations as well as projects I’m doing, like one-minute nature walks or my free seeds project - the subject of this short video piece!
My one-minute nature videos began during the pandemic as a way to provide virtual nature therapy to friends and family who were stuck inside due to the winter lockdown. Now, even though the lockdown is over, so many people are entirely disconnected from the wild world they live in. So many people find it hard to connect with nature: wild spaces are often inaccessible or privatized. Even if you can’t get to a national or state park, backyards, porches, and balconies are all great opportunities for connection. Just spending time with nature and learning what’s out there, we learn so much, and our appreciation grows. And with the free seed project, people are able to grow little wild spaces anywhere they want—in their backyard, in a little pot on their balcony, or on a roadside median!
I have been a nature educator in some form or another for my entire adult life. My goal is to share my love and sense of wonder for the natural world with as many people as possible: I love spreading awareness about the importance of protecting our beautiful outdoors, and I have taken part in conferences and events designed to do just that—spread the love and spread the word!
Spend some time outdoors, even if it’s just your backyard. Take a breath, watch some little wild neighbors interact, and I promise you will learn to love nature like I do—and feel a charge to protect it.
Follow @naturewalkswithjudy for more information about our coastal Carolina ecosystem, ways to get involved and protect our special natural places, and doses of meditative marsh magic!
