I created my nonprofit textiles studio Praxis as a space to invite everyone in, regardless of skill or knowledge. Most people that come here are beginners, and we offer classes on knitting, natural dye making (including growing and sustainably processing indigo), spinning wool, and repurposing materials to create their own clothing.
Textiles is an art form for all people. We’re all wearing clothes, we’re all sleeping under blankets. With that lens, we can come into a community that’s generally underserved, that doesn’t have a lot of arts access, and historically doesn’t feel welcome in spaces like this and say - no, this is for you. We’re all connected, and learning about these histories is an empowerment for where we are all today.
Since I’m coming from academia and a fine arts background, most people don’t really understand that most art is functioning on a grassroots and community level. What’s brought value to my life is living in a community, working in that same community and doing what I love in that community. Art is shareable and joyful to do together. Not only are you leaving with an object with functionality, but you walk away with the experience and knowledge to continue your own practice, from an opportunity in your own neighborhood.
