I started working with Big Sunday when David started it in 1999. I came up with the idea of doing a mosaic sun to brighten people's day. My husband, Bob, jigsaws the wood, and I tile the face. We then bring it in for the community to come and tile, and give them all the freedom to create whatever kind of design they want. It brings the community together. People sit together and they make friends. People from all walks of life, from all over Los Angeles, come in and volunteer and work on these suns, and then we install them in different nonprofit facilities. Most of the places that we go to don't have that much beauty as far as art goes.
Just spiritually, because so many people have given their love and creativity into the suns, it kind of manifests itself once it's placed into an environment. I just got an email a couple of days ago from a woman who works at a school. She was saying how everyone who walks through just has their day brightened when they see the sun. It makes her happy every single day that she sits with it.
It just makes me feel good that we, as a community, can do something, because art heals. Art heals the person who is making the art. It heals people who are looking at the art. And so I think that it's not just a pretty thing going on the wall—it actually has a spirit.
