Helping Dogs become Pets

Care For The People
Hi, my name is Lindy Coleman, and for almost 16 years I’ve spent my Saturdays volunteering with the dogs at Pet Helpers on James Island. What started as a simple desire to help quickly became one of the most meaningful parts of my life. My role is pretty simple on paper—playtime, walks, and giving each dog enough attention and comfort so they feel ready to meet potential adopters. But anyone who has ever worked with shelter animals knows it’s so much more than that.

Some days are harder than others. Some dogs find homes quickly, and others wait far longer than you wish they would. But the moment you see a shy dog open up, or a nervous pup finally relax enough to show their true personality—that feeling reminds you why showing up matters.

Volunteering has given me a community I didn’t even realize I was missing. Week after week, I’m surrounded by people who care deeply—about animals, about each other, and about making the world a little softer. And the animals feel that love too. For the long-timers, sometimes the familiar face of a volunteer is the thing that carries them through.

If you’re looking for a way to connect—with people, with purpose, with joy—I can’t recommend volunteering enough. Whether you foster, walk dogs, take one out for a day trip, or simply show up to help however you can, I promise it will change you. I know it changed me.
