I work with older adults because I believe that connection is essential, and too many seniors are isolated and lonely. At Befrienders, we match older adults seeking friendship with community volunteers, and I’ve seen firsthand the difference a single friendship can make. Seniors gain confidence, excitement, and joy, while volunteers are reminded of the wisdom, resilience, and beauty that comes with aging.
I’m inspired by the seniors, by friends and family, and selfishly, by my own experience with loneliness. There was a time in my life when I had no friends, it was hard, discouraging, and isolating. I can’t imagine how much harder that must feel as a senior. This understanding fuels my commitment to show up, listen, and build genuine relationships.
Key moments that gave me clarity include seeing the transformation when a senior makes a friend through our program. The impact on both their life and the volunteer’s life is profound. I’ve watched seniors go from hesitant or unsure to energized and joyful simply through consistent human connection. It’s a simple idea, but its effects are powerful.
This work has profoundly impacted my own life. I’ve become at peace with aging, seeing it as something beautiful and valuable. I treat my body, my family, and my friends with greater care, and I approach life with deeper appreciation for each individual’s story. Seniors have taught me that growing older is an opportunity for continued growth, learning, and connection.
To me, being American means being part of a community, helping one another, practicing random acts of kindness, and working together to improve the well-being of our neighbors, not just ourselves. This work allows me to live those values every day.
