I teach free yoga and meditation classes to Black, native, indigenous and disenfranchised people of color experiencing financial hardship

Reach The People
I started advocating for and implementing free weekly meditation and yoga classes in my hometown of Minneapolis in 2015. This was the first people of color yoga class offered in my city at the time. Many of the participants were artists, entrepreneurs, small business owners, students and working class individuals dealing with burnout and desire for more community. From the start I recognized the need for rest, focus and ease.

Each session involved a check-in where folks could share what was coming up for them in daily life. I'll never forget when a participant shared their anxiety over a recent grant and fellowship application. They attended my sessions every week. By spring they received the grant.

I had so many students tell me they found themselves and their passion just by participating in my practice. That felt like deep connection to the carework I wish to see in the world. Volunteering my time and energy is deeply rewarding and often results in long term collaborations and support from my community. Making space for everyone to receive care is at the heart of this work. When we see people who look like us in the room we feel a sense that we are meant to be there too!
