We all need someone to listen to us, but for children, it’s different: they need someone to care.

Listen To The People
You ask what does it mean to be American? For me, It means growth, it means freedom, it means change.

As my one and only daughter got older, I realized I am no longer just Auntie Dorothy or Miss Dorothy. I’m a mom and that comes with more responsibilities.

I contribute to Brilliant Detroit by giving the children someone who listens. Someone who puts them in their place and gives them structure and helps teach them respect and manners, and gives them someone to listen.

At first, my daughter was the one who inspired me to keep her busy, but over the last three years, I have been volunteering. I’m listening. I realize that the children there inspired me. The looks on their faces, the way they light up and are excited to share with me their achievements at home and in school inspire me.

Again, it’s all about the children: the looks on their faces and the concern they have for me when I’m not smiling or I’m not even there.

The best moment I can describe that helps me continue to go is to see the children. Even the little babies react to Miss Dorothy walking through the door.
As far as my life, I’ve been through a lot in these last four years and Brilliant has kept me going, between my daughter asking, "Mommy are we going?" and the children seeing me at the park and making sure that I’ll be there the next day.
