How does our prison system function really and who are the people within it?

Teach The People
I have been teaching a class at the maximum-security Hancock State Prison for 9 years. As a professor of political science and philosophy at Georgia State University, I teach both my GSU students and my Hancock students the philosophy of criminal justice, inviting them to question what justice really means. By bringing these college kids into the prison for discussion-based classes, I give them a glimpse into a world many of them have never even considered. The discussions highlight the importance of empathy and the value of new perspectives. Many Hancock students feel safe in this class to express and feel, a luxury that they do not have in day to day prison life. In addition, the open-mindedness of my Georgia State students inspires these men to keep improving and bettering themselves in a society that has deemed them unforgivable. My goal is to educate all of my students on criminal justice in a way that is personal, vulnerable, and forthright.
