I founded Dancing Against Hunger in March of 2022 because I believe art and compassion together can change lives. I grew up loving dance—it was the thing that made me feel at home wherever I moved. But I also witnessed hunger—not just in faraway places, but in rural America, in schools, in communities that too often are forgotten.
At DAH, I organize accessible dance education so young people can move, express, and lead. I raise the visibility of food insecurity by coordinating food drives, partnering with food banks, and mobilizing youth to donate and volunteer. DAH has engaged more than 4,200 participants. I am inspired by my experience living in a low-income area of Mississippi from 2006-2014. On the TEDx stage, I spoke about food insecurity within education and about schoolchildren going hungry.
The problem I hope to solve is two-fold: hunger and inaccessibility. Food insecurity is more than not having enough meals—it’s about how hunger undermines learning, health, and dignity. I want to bring both nourishment and creative opportunity to communities.
What I get out of contributing is connection and purpose. Seeing over 2,600 donations collected and dozens of partnerships built — each one is a testament that change is possible when passion meets service.
