I am editor of our four community newspapers: Austin Weekly, Brookfield-Riverside Landmark, Forest Park Review, and The Wednesday Journal. I work with our reporters, our freelancers, on story assignments, editing copy, assigning photographers, listening to a lot of people around the communities for story ideas, as well as getting them from our reporters. A lot of people, a lot of towns don't realize until their newspaper is gone how important it was to have this identifying, connecting source. It's really a tough time to be in this business. It is being completely reimagined. How is it reported? How is it presented? What are the platforms we use? How is it paid for? The model that we used for 200 years of selling ads to eyeballs is gone. We now need to have a model where readers are willing to pay for our reporting. We're in that transition. We're five years in as a nonprofit. It's hard. It's uncertain. But the only future of local news is if readers are willing to help pay for it.
