My mother is the director of Theatre North and it plays a major part in both our lives. We have cried over it, fought over it and reveled in for several decades. I have supported my mom over the years by always being there to give an honest opinion. I have worn many hats; I have helped with grants writing, public relations, and performing as an actor.
My mom inspires me. She has shown me what is possible when you focus and do not give up. She took on a challenge for from her comfort zone and has kept this company together. I am hoping to help keep the company together in the future. My mom is 96 years old and she is getting ready to retire. I want to make sure the company survives and flourishes. I receive a deep sense of accomplishment.
When performing I feel I am a part of a community that is precious and dear to me. I need the theatre to have a deeper connection with myself and others. It is fulfilling. I believe that theatre takes us on a spiritual journey. It enhances our lives. I believe it teaches us empathy. I have watched others look outside of themselves and change from really allowing themselves to be absorbed in a play. There is nothing like the feeling of communicating with an audience in that space.
