We started a kelp farm in Maine in 2021, because we learned that simply growing kelp in our oceans improves ocean and environmental health. Kelp is not just a sustainable resource, it's a regenerative one! We were also inspired by how nutrient packed kelp is, with a rich profile of vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds that can be used as ingredients in so many things -- from skincare, to food, to medicine, to bioplastics, to biofuel to name a few.
Over 90% of the seaweed we consume in this country is imported from far away countries and untraceable. We saw farming kelp and creating natural skincare products from our farmed kelp extract as an opportunity to produce a local, nutrient packed resource and product line here in Maine- which will benefit both the planet, and our customers.
It feels really good to create authentic, effective products using an overlooked regenerative resource that is improving the health of our oceans - to know the process from seed to skin, from planting the kelp seed in the ocean in the winter months, to learning the science behind kelp's bioactive compounds and benefits to skin, to formulating, making, and bottling our products. Kelp farming in Maine is growing, and by finding high value uses for kelp (like our skincare and other extract applications and technology we are pursuing), it provides opportunities for more fishermen and those in Maine's working waterfront communities to diversify their income, which is becoming particularly important in the face of climate change.
The impact of this work has been profound for me as a co-founder of the company. It has given my life meaning and purpose in a way I had not had before. I feel genuinely passionate about what we are doing, and sharing that passion and excitement I feel about the potential of seaweed aquaculture to transform our planet with others. It is work I truly believe in, and being a part of the innovation and ideas for the future is really exciting.
