My parents and I started Joppa to help homeless people survive, find housing and rebuild their lives

Provide For The People
Our mission is to create communities of unconditional love, support, and hope for the homeless, as we work together to end homelessness. Joppa engages the community to give their time, treasures, and talents. We are called to work together to help people access resources and fill gaps in homeless services, housing, and education.

Our calling is inspired by the belief that every person is created with purpose and deserves to be treated with dignity.

For more than 17 years, Joppa has walked alongside people experiencing homelessness in Greater Des Moines—meeting them where they are and helping them survive, find housing, and rebuild their lives. Joppa’s results are measurable:
• 800+ people lifted off the streets
• 1.5 million+ pounds of food distributed
• 100,000+ meals served

Homeless Services is the foundation of Joppa. Each year, over 2,000 Iowans volunteer at Joppa. We visit approximately 230 homeless families and individuals every week—52 weeks per year—regardless of weather.

For over 900 consecutive weeks, our Outreach Program serves unsheltered people living under bridges, in tents, and in vehicles. We build relationships; provide food, water, and essentials; and connect them with resources related to housing, employment, mental health, and more.

In total, Joppa has helped more than 800 men, women, and children into homes. After they move into permanent housing, our Aftercare Program, including weekly visits, a Circle of Friends, and other services helps clients take positive steps in their health, relationships, and personal fulfillment, and has resulted in 83% remaining in housing today.
