I work with an autism center that's dedicated to help families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder integrate their child/children into the community. As a behavioral technician, my goal is to address the child's maladaptive behaviors, using various Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy methods. To do this, we create an individualized behavioral plan to work on communication skills, independence, and safety practices for the child.
My goal with this line of work is to move my clients towards greater independence and make them feel more accepted. Working with them from the ground up, I am able to learn the many facets of autism treatment. Using my methods, I see their progression with my own eyes, which has been the most rewarding aspect. Particularly, watching my youngest client learn to verbalize emotions, ask for help, and improve transitioning from activities has given me the inspiration to dive more into the field.
