Happy Apple Pie Shop Serves up Jobs

Nourish The People
My name is Michelle Mascaro and I run the Happy Apple Pie Shop located on Harrison Street in the Arts district in Oak Park, IL. We have a social mission. We're a social enterprise. We hire a blended work environment of people with and without disabilities to create all of our pies. It's important for self-esteem to have a place to contribute to, whatever your abilities are. When people come here, I look at what their abilities are.

We also decided to be sustainable too. We get all of our fruit and vegetables from a local farm in Michigan, and we make our pie crust one hundred percent by hand. Everything that we use in baking and everything that we give customers is compostable. We didn't want to kill the environment with pie.

A sense of community at heart is what America at its best stands for – people helping each other, looking out for each other, creating a safe environment for each other. And that's what we try to create every day here on our little corner.
