Mending Broken Wings

Save The People
My name is Cricket Carroll, and I have been a volunteer at The Avian Conservation Center/The Center for Birds of Prey Avian Medical clinic in Awendaw, SC for 20 years. I was first introduced to the Center for Birds of Prey when I visited the Sewee Interpretive Center in Awendaw with my daughter and saw an incredible educational program. At that moment, I knew I wanted to give my time when I was ready and volunteer to help rescue some of the beautiful bird species I saw during the program. Now I volunteer weekly at the Avian Medical Clinic at the Avian Conservation Center/ Center for Birds of Prey, where I help prepare food and medications for various species and assist with their medical treatment, overall care, and eventual release.

People don't realize how detrimental human activity has been for many of these birds. Fishing line, soccer nets, cars, and dogs can create life-or-death scenarios for many of these beautiful species. Here at the Avian Medical Clinic, we do our best to return those birds to the wild. It's incredibly rewarding to witness an injured rescued bird soar into the sky upon release and realize you've been a part of the healing process.
