I started gardening in 2020, and I got into it on an ask. I was the number one killer of houseplants! But during a women’s empowerment program hosted by a local councilwoman, I started learning more from one of the other women in the group. She asked me if I’d be interested in running a community garden. I said yes, not knowing that my whole life would change.

Our mission at Shalom and Tranquility is to educate, unify and improve the wellness of all families - typical and atypical. I’ve lived in this neighborhood since I was ten years old, and I’ve seen it change over the years. There still isn’t a real grocery store nearby, and while we grow fresh fruits and vegetables to share with our neighbors, we also offer them an oasis in the midst of chaos.

Shalom and Tranquility is the neighborhood’s living room. And so when I think of a living room, I’m kicking off my shoes, I’m putting my feet up - I’m just chilling. We have events for kids and families, we offer classes and volunteer opportunities, and everyone comes out to eat. But I believe what sets us apart is really the relationship piece. Because without relationship, this means nothing. We all have a common mission, and that is to keep this place a safe space within community.
