The Power of Presence

Serve The People
My name is Josh Socher, and helping people has always been at the center of my life. Even as a child, I noticed that friends and classmates would come to me with their problems, and I naturally wanted to support them. Originally, I planned to pursue the arts—I loved writing, film, and theater—but a movie about youth counselors changed my path. It showed me a way to make a real difference in people’s lives, combining empathy, presence, and meaningful work.

After college, I began working with children in schools, after-school programs, and with kids who had special needs. I also spent time supporting adults navigating life as asylum seekers, helping them overcome barriers and build hope in difficult circumstances. Over time, I realized that my favorite part of helping isn’t teaching or solving every problem—it’s being present, building trust, and giving someone hope when life feels hopeless.

Back in the U.S., I became a youth counselor at a residential crisis center while also staffing a 24/7 mental health hotline. I learned that while I couldn’t fix every situation, I could ease suffering, become a reliable adult figure, and show children that someone genuinely cares. The small moments—the notes kids leave, shared jokes, and honest conversations—are what make the work meaningful.

These experiences reinforced my decision to pursue a master’s in social work. My goal is to become a school social worker and eventually create programs and residential support for children in need. To me, being American means giving people a fighting chance, showing that support and opportunity exist, and standing beside others when it matters most. Helping people has shown me the power of connection, the importance of empathy, and the profound difference one person can make in another’s life.
