My lifelong fascination with the American Civil War, and the inheritance of a model 1861 Springfield musket from my dad, opened the door for me into the world of civil war reenacting. Little did I know how little I knew about the hobby as well as the civil war period itself when I joined the 8th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Co. A, based at the New England Civil War Museum located in the Rockville section of Vernon, CT.
After over 8 years as part of the 8 CVI, I understand that it is about much more than a hobby or a bunch of people dressing up and playing pretend. The 8th CVI, as well as several other organizations across the country are pivotal in drumming up funds and donations that help in the purchase and preservation of battlefield property and historical landmarks. Raising awareness to help save part of our history before development forever erases it, is a never ending mission. Through our annual events, such as parades, mock battles, encampments, school appearances, lectures, memorial services, monument dedications and more, we not only raise money for our cause, but just as important, we also raise awareness among the public and future generations.
For myself the opportunity to teach school children the importance of this period in American history is reward in itself. I see myself in some of their faces and can tell how excited they are to engage with history they can see and touch instead of just reading about it. Being able to share my knowledge and experiences with the kids also teaches me something about them and I feel America’s future is in good hands. With our help The American Battlefield Trust has saved over 60,000 acres of historically important land, but the battle continues.
