A Cleveland Gem: Lily Jade

Clothe The People
I just really like helping people. It makes me feel good inside, knowing that I did something positive for someone who needed it more than me.

My dad and I were out when I was younger and we saw some people who seemed like they maybe needed some warmer clothes and food. It was really cold outside, so I asked him if we could go get them some things. This gave me the idea for my sock drive. Every year, I collect socks from drop off points around my city, to deliver to people in the community who need them.

When I was five, my dad was doing mixes in the basement, and I didn't really like them. So he taught me to use his equipment and we started having deejay battles back and forth. Eventually it got some local attention, and the local radio station WOVU offered me my own show. Since then, I've been known as DJ Lily Jade. I thought this would be a great opportunity to promote my sock drive even more, so every year I get to announce it on the air and it reaches even more people. It’s grown every year because of this.

My family and I load up the radio station's van, and drive around different areas of the city to hand the socks out directly. I really like being able to see the smiles on people's faces, and that they're able to pick out the socks that they actually want. I just love making sure that I made those people's days better.

You don't have to do anything major to make a difference in someone's life. Start with something small. I hope to demonstrate that it doesn’t matter how old you are - if you believe you can do it, you can do it.
