My name is Eva, and I’m nine years old. In my Orlando neighborhood, I help care for Sylvester, a stray cat who’s been here since the day our community was built—eighteen years ago! Sylvester isn’t just any cat; he’s a true resident and part of our lives.

Every day, my family and I welcome Sylvester inside so he can eat and sleep safely away from other animals outdoors. We pet him, clean him, brush his fur, and make sure he feels loved. We even deworm him and use lice treatments to help keep him healthy. When he purrs on our couch, I believe he knows he’s home.

Sylvester is also a great hunter—he sometimes brings rats to us as presents! It’s funny but it shows how smart and helpful he is to our neighborhood.

Sometimes, Sylvester disappears for a day or two, visiting other neighbors who also help care for him. Once, he was gone for two days, and my mom and I cried because we were so worried. The day he came back, we were so happy that we hugged him and made his favorite place extra cozy.

Helping Sylvester, and watching all the neighbors work together for him, is what makes a true American spirit. I am happy my family can play a part in that.
