We're Here to Bowl: Bringing the DD Community Together

Entertain The People
Every Saturday we come to bowl at Yorktown Lanes. The vibe is just fun! Bowling is like the number one activity that everybody wants to do, and we just keep coming back.

I supported individuals with developmental disabilities through the organization Friends Forever, and it really gave me an insight to nonprofits. So when I took over A Place 2B Me, they were already ready to help. There's so many things that can be done in this field, and we came together for this bowling league.

It's important to have the community see them because they're real people, too. And they have people that love them. Isolation isn't good for anybody; some of the individuals live in homes, so all they see is their staff and the people they live with. And only seeing the same people everyday isn't conducive to anybody.

Some people need extra assistance to bowl with ramps or help from their providers. And then there are others who are just fully independent and are hitting 250 scores. Everyone is interacting with each other, and making new friends. It's really beautiful to see.

I want people to leave feeling just happy and included and feeling like they met somebody new. They're just accepted for who they are. We need to adapt for them, but we also need to adapt for anybody else. I think that everybody needs to be adapted for. It just helps people learn how to do that. We've had so many people join their league and then we've had so many people attend our events, too. We all support each other.
