Most, if not every weekend, the fraternities at UMass Amherst throw parties. People storm the streets and leave beer everywhere which I find to be disrespectful and disgusting. Through a collective effort from Greek life across campus at UMass Amherst, we work to clean the streets. There are a lot of frats here at UMass Amherst, and most if not all of them send a bunch of guys to help out. Because there are so many people there at 8am, pickup rarely lasts long. It’s the least I can do, but it feels good to give back to my community at least a little bit.
Picking up trash isn't something I particularly enjoy, but it is most definitely a responsibility more of us should take on. Would you want litter on your front lawn? I doubt it. I try to be mindful of where I'm disposing and pick up trash if I see it. The community graciously allows students like myself to have a blast at college, so I repay the favor by helping out when I can. The people of Amherst are hard working people and they support this town.
Amherst isn’t just another "party school" town, it’s a committed and caring community that supports students from all across the world. I appreciate the community and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere but Amherst.
