In the heart of Charlotte, love takes the form of service through Block Love Charlotte and its founder, Ms. Deb. She is a woman of grace, grit, and compassion who dedicates her life to serving the un-homed population in our community. Every day, she provides three hot meals, clothing, housing assistance, and countless resources — but most importantly, she gives hope and has inspired me to give back as well.
The challenge she addresses is not just homelessness, but the feeling of being unseen. Many of our un-homed neighbors have lost their sense of worth, and Ms. Deb. reminds them that they still matter. Watching her work has shown me what true leadership looks like — showing up with love, even when it’s hard, and meeting people where they are.
My personal journey of service was shaped by my own experiences with adversity. I know what it feels like to rely on the kindness of others, and that empathy drives me to give back. Volunteering with Block Love Charlotte has given me moments I’ll never forget — handing someone a warm meal, sharing a conversation, or seeing a smile return to a weary face. Each interaction reminds me that giving back doesn’t just change others; it transforms you too.
Lifting others up is what being American means to me. It’s the belief that we are stronger together, that compassion is power, and that caring for one another builds a better community and country. Ms. Deb. embodies that spirit every single day. Through her example, I’ve learned that love can’t fix everything, but it can heal hearts and restore hope — and that’s what keeps me committed to serving alongside her.
