Volunteering at the International Rescue Committee as a teacher’s aide for adults learning English was initially challenging. I didn’t intentionally seek a significant contribution to a community or issue; I was simply filling my time. However, as I spent more time with the students, I realized the profound impact volunteers and teachers like me have on their lives. The students’ ability to learn English and improve their living conditions alone is incredibly rewarding. In class, the main instructor delivers the daily lesson, which often covers various subjects such as building vocabulary, learning grammatical structures, and engaging in discussions about global and local events. My role is to provide each student with an individualized teaching approach, whether it’s on the current topic or any subject that resonates with them. Recently, I’ve noticed the positive impact these students have on their local communities. They’re actively encouraging others to learn English, which is widely regarded as one of the most challenging languages to learn.
