Bringing fitness, joy, and inclusion to New York’s children

Advocate For The People
I’m Kimberly Burd, and my work is all about creating opportunities for children with disabilities and complex medical needs. After my son Baron was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease in 2018, I knew I had to step up—not just as his mom, but as an advocate for all kids facing similar challenges.

Joining Asphalt Green’s board opened a new way to make a difference. I introduced Tribeca Prep to their swim program, and it became a space where children could feel capable, included, and part of a community. That success led to a $200,000 grant, helping fund inclusive sports programs for kids across New York City.

I’ve also helped connect Asphalt Green with CHOP, bringing doctors into our programs to teach families and young athletes about sports medicine and nutrition. It’s about giving kids the tools, confidence, and support to thrive, no matter their needs.

Every laugh, every small victory, every moment of inclusion reminds me why I do this work. Seeing a child realize they can do something they thought they couldn’t—that’s what keeps me going.
