After the 9/11 tragedy, we decided among a group of concerned citizens that we would create a project called Heroes Among Us. It would be a combination of remembering those who died on 9/11, including firefighters and policemen. It started as a memorial reading of all those who died, combined with a fundraising dinner and awards for those who serve the community. The project lasted six seasons and provided funds for the local policemen and firefighters, and recognized those who provided heroic service to the community. The idea was pitched to a national level with Fox News. A granite memorial was purchased with fundraising efforts to memorialize the 911 tragedy and was unveiled by the Governor of Minnesota. The project was disbanded when public interest in 911 waned and members of the group left town for other working opportunities.
