For the past 18 years, Rock Ministries has hosted a Thanksgiving feast for the entire Kensington community—located in one of the poorest congressional districts in America. Our ministry sits in the heart of what has been described as one of the largest open-air drug markets in the nation. Yet on this one special day, our entire neighborhood comes together to give thanks, share a meal, and experience genuine fellowship and unity.
Everyone is welcome—whether an individual is living on the streets in the midst of addiction, simply passing through, or a family with nowhere else to go. One of the most meaningful aspects of this event is the generosity and dedication of our volunteers. More than 200 people sign up in advance each year, each receiving specific assignments such as serving at tables, cooking, distributing desserts, setting up, or breaking down the event. We also prepare take-home meals for anyone who requests them.
Every guest receives a Rock Ministries hoodie and a bag of groceries before they leave. While seated, guests are joined by volunteers who are available to listen and address any concerns or challenges they may be facing. Our chaplain corps is on hand from start to finish, ready to assist anyone seeking help with addiction or other immediate needs.
