My name is Mel Gosselin and I am the executive director at Camp Allen in New Hampshire. We are a summer camp for individuals with developmental and/or physical disabilities, but we are also so much more than that. We are a community who strives to provide friendship, understanding, life skills, enrichment, and a chance to feel at home. As executive director, I oversee the camp and the counselors and help schedule daily activities, allocate the proper resources, acquire medical personnel, manage the facilities, and plan/fund field trips. Working with Camp Allen has taught me so much about myself and about community. It has inspired me to always be positive, to be grateful, and to always be thinking of others. Seeing the kids and adults that attend the camp are inspiration to me through their resilience, humor, and overall attitude. I love welcoming new members and helping them acclimate, but also love seeing campers who come back year after year knowing they feel comfortable there. In my work I hope I can continue with giving back to this amazing community, making an impact in these peoples lives, and helping spread awareness about the importance of this work.
