Walking the Land My Ancestors Called Home

Enlighten The People
I’m Shawn Stevens, also known as Red Eagle. I’m a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans and chairperson of Redroad Reclamation. I focus on sharing the cultural, spiritual, and ecological teachings of my people, helping others connect with the land, their ancestry, and each other. Through Redroad Reclamation, I work with youth and adults to revive Indigenous language, traditions, and land-based practices. My goal is to restore what has been forgotten—Indigenous language, traditions, and land-based knowledge—and to invite people of all backgrounds to reconnect with the land and learn from nature.

As a descendant of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band, my work is deeply personal. It honors my ancestors and reconnects me to the places they walked. I draw inspiration from my lineage and from nature—the land, water, and sky that continue to teach and guide me. I lead gatherings in the Hudson Valley, NY, and Western Massachusetts, bringing people together through ceremony and stewardship. Many gatherings include drumming, songs, and offerings. Every year on Indigenous Day, many of us gather to make prayers and offerings to help clear pollution in the Housatonic River, honoring the water and reminding participants of our responsibility to care for it. Through this work, I also foster understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

I share my culture through music, dance, and storytelling, living traditions that carry history, teachings, and memory from one generation to the next while strengthening connection to the natural world.

What keeps me grounded is seeing how these experiences open hearts, inspire respect for the land, connection across differences, and a renewed sense of belonging. For me, this path is about remembering who we are in relation to each other and to the earth that sustains us.
