The Little Dog Library

Supply The People
My name is Amy, and I started a Little Free Dog Library in my front yard.

I never had a dog until 2020 during the pandemic. My husband and I started fostering puppies, and one of them was Cooper. He gets us outside, he gets us meeting people in the neighborhood. We just couldn’t let him go.

One of our neighbors had a dog that passed away, and he offered us some dog supplies. I suggested that he start a free library to share them with others, but nothing ever came from it. But that idea kind of stuck with me. So I found a deal on a little library, and my husband helped me install it in our front yard. I even made it a logo with Cooper’s face, and it was just kind of fun.

At first, our neighbors weren’t sure what to make of it, so I posted it on our neighborhood Facebook page, just letting everyone know that there was now a little library out front, and to help themselves and their pups to some treats. And people loved it.

Neighbors started leaving extra bags of treats to share with everyone. Some even started leaving thank you notes. It really brought us all together. A lot of times people will let their kids out of their strollers to go up and get their dogs a treat, which is super sweet. It makes me feel really good.

If you can do the smallest thing to make somebody’s day or give them a reason to smile or make their dog happy, I think it goes a long way. In a world where everyone’s online and I feel like we’re more disconnected than ever, it’s nice to have those little person to person interactions. It brings me a lot of joy.
